Their excellent eyesight and preference for open terrain make this approach challenging but rewarding. You’ll want to have good optics handy to make sure you see them before they see you.

Leven recommends hunters start where he did. “My first big game rifle was a .257 Weatherby, custom made by Weaver rifles here in Colorado. But, you don’t need to spend an absurd amount to get the whole custom works. The .257 Weatherby itself is known as one of the most flat and fast shooters out there, capable of harvesting most North American big game species.”

Other popular calibers include:

.243 Winchester: Ideal for its flat trajectory and manageable recoil, making it a favorite for beginners and experts alike.
.270 Winchester: A versatile option with sufficient range and power for clean kills. 13
6.5 Creedmoor: Known for its precision and long-range capabilities, perfect for pronghorn hunting in open terrain.
7mm-08 Remington: Balances accuracy and stopping power for mid- to long-range shots.

Choosing a lightweight rifle is advantageous, as pronghorn hunts often involve extensive walking across rugged terrain.

These days, Leven prefers to hunt with a custom 26 Nosler from Weaver Rifles, a custom manufacture in Colorado. It’s equipped with a Huskemaw scope “It’s a fast flat shooter! It has taken many animals of all shapes and sizes at various long ranges with ease.”

This particular gun carries immense sentimental value for Leven, too. “It is one of the last rifles I have of my late step-father’s. We used to spend a ton of time at the reloading bench together where I learned to love loading the fastest and most effective loads for many calibers.” Over time, Leven developed a further appreciation for the reliability of this rifle. “I specifically came to love this rifle for its accuracy and effectiveness on the range and in the field.”
