Once the domain of special forces or trophy-seeking alien predators, thermal optics have now come down to obtainable price points for most varmint and hog hunters. Kevin Reese and Jeff Murray from Sightmark and Pulsar optics join the No Lowballers to explain how more affordable thermals doesn’t mean reduced capability.
How can we get the highest of high-tech optics without breaking the bank? Murray explains that much like flat-screen TVs and other tech, thermal optic technology has become more affordable as companies have learned how to more efficiently manufacture the components. What was a $10,000 optic can now be had for less that $4,000.
What benefit does thermal bring? Where legal, thermal provides hunters with the ability to find hogs or downed game, even when hiding in grass or brush. Thermal can also be used to verify the route is clear before hunters make their way into their stands in the morning.
The Pulsar team also lets the No Lowballers in on the biggest challenge with thermal optics, and that’s the difficulty in determining range. Fortunately, Pulsar now makes thermal optics with rangefinding features built in.
