Dan Wesson DW Specialist Commander Optics-Ready

To me, the “Commander” size is the perfect platform for the 1911 pistol. The 4.25” barrel, giving it an overall length of 6.75” and a height of 5.5”, just makes it the perfect combination. The Commander is the version of the DW Specialist that I prefer. With its stainless-steel construction and “Duty Black” nitride finish, mated with tan G10 VZ Operator II grip panels, it’s a professional-looking piece. The gorged slide has an inverted top rib with a serrated ledge rear sight and a green lamp with white target ring front sight. Nighthawk Custom GI Plus Model 1911

Up to this point, we have been examining new 1911 pistols with all the modern “bells and whistles.” Now, I’d like to step back and look at a new, more traditional 1911 as carried by our 20th-century service personnel. Nighthawk operates on the single gunsmith concept, with all guns put together individually. This is a historically inspired iconic 1911 with a polished deep-blue finish, WWI-era vertical rear serrations and roll markings, a ring hammer in homage to the 1949 Commander, a traditional barrel bushing, sights that recall early Model 1911 pistols, but with a taller GI rear sight and a 14k gold bead front sight. Controls are classically GI with a “nub” thumb safety, standard slide stop, and magazine catch. The grip panels are double-diamond checked cocobolo with an inlaid Nighthawk medallion. Modern touches include an extended beavertail grip safety with memory bump, checkered front strap and flat mainspring housing, Medium solid trigger with custom-set 3.5-3.75 lb. pull, tuned and polished extractor, hand-fit firing pin stop, stainless firing pin, complete exterior dehorning, and ultra hi-cut front strap. This beauty would be the pride of any Doughboy, Marine Raider or modern 1911 pistol aficionado. The MSRP is $4,499.00. UPC: 806802761459

Prommersberger Sport Target Pistol (STP) S.W.A.T.

The German-made STP pistols are available in the USA through Precision Shooting Supply. The version I shot at the 2026 Industry Day at the Range was the Sentry 5.0 in 9mm (also available in .45 ACP). This classic interpretation of the 1911 pistol is the definition of Teutonic workmanship. The precision cold hammer-forged 5” barrel and bushing provide top accuracy. Traditional looks are emphasized with Nill checkered, double-diamond, walnut grip panels. The Sentry has an ultimate match trigger with adjustable overtravel, plus an LPA full-adjustable rear sight dovetailed into the slide; as is the patridge-type front sight. Other features include front and rear slide serrations, oval ring-type hammer, extended beavertail grip safety, flat mainspring housing that is checkered, along with the front strap, and an extended magazine catch. Finish on the Sentry is Black DLC 42, overall length is 8.9”, and the empty weight is 43.9 oz. It comes with two 10-round capacity magazines and is delivered in a premium gun bag with accessories. The version I shot was the 9mm, and it has a 16+1 cartridge capacity, 5.05” barrel (6-groove, 1:10” twist), 8.74” overall length, and an empty weight of 40 oz. It has GLOCK-compatible front and adjustable rear sights; the rear sight is built into the optics-cut cover plate. Rock River Arms RRA 1911A1

Rock River Arms (RRA) makes eight different variations of the Model 1911A1 pistol. At the 2026 SHOT Show, they exhibited a new Model 1911A1 that has not yet made it to their website. It has no official name as yet, but may get a “1922” designation and is being promoted to bring high-level competition performance in a production-grade 1911/2011 pistol. Its development is also in conjunction with the RRA #1911 #2011 Pistol Team. Some new design features include a completely new frame and body with very tight, precise fit; an aluminum flat trigger with a blue carbon-fiber inlay, and it appears to be optics ready with suppressor-height sights for co-witnessing. New for 2026 is the SIG SAUER 211 line of 9mm 1911-type pistols. I elected to feature the GT4 Coyote (GT4C), but there are six other versions that are new or coming soon. The GT4C is one of the latter and features a carry length SIGLOC Pro optic-ready slide with a 4.2” bull barrel. There’s also a carry length steel frame and alloy grip module with G10 grip panels, and an added low-profile, removable magwell. Final Thoughts on the 2026 1911 Landscape

The 2026 1911 market demonstrates that innovation and tradition continue to coexist within the platform. Manufacturers are refining ergonomics, expanding caliber offerings, experimenting with lightweight materials, and introducing double-stack variations—all while preserving the core single-action design that defines the 1911. Like the “obsolete” revolver, Old Slabsides, the M1911 pistol is not only holding fast, but judging by the number of new introductions, its popularity is growing! Whether you prefer a traditional Government configuration or a modernized performance-oriented build, this year’s 25 new 1911 pistols show that the platform remains both relevant and adaptable in today’s handgun market.
