If you follow pistol gossip, you’ve noticed a little earthquake in the GLOCK world. The company has quietly marked a long list of models as discontinued, including several GLOCK Gen 5 variants of its flagship G17.
What happens when a brand as ubiquitous as GLOCK signals it might bow out of part of its lineup? Short version: demand spikes, inventory vanishes and collectors start acting like shoppers at a Black Friday sale with better taste in optics.
According to Outdoor Analytics, GLOCK sales have jumped more than 30% since the news broke, while G17 sales are up more than 40%. Overall inventory has dropped by roughly 60%, and major distributors such as Lipsey’s are reporting stock as fully allocated. That scarcity is showing up in the bidding trenches, too — two Gen 5 G17 MOS pistols topped the $2,000 mark over the weekend on GunBroker.
Not every model is following the same curve. For example, the very similar long-slide Gen 5 G17L MOS remains relatively stable, and pricing there looks normal. But the standard Gen 5 G17 MOS is drying up fast, and demand is clearly outpacing supply. Collectors want the MOS variant for its optics-ready versatility, and the moment scarcity hit, those buyers moved.
The next shoe to drop may be the G19 MOS. GLOCK’s updated lineup reportedly includes only one MOS variant of the G19 (as a distributor-exclusive,) with sales of the G19 COA already halted for the commercial market. That shift is already echoing in the data: Outdoor Analytics reports G19 sales up 40% over the same period. If recent history is any guide, the G19 MOS could soon see the same kind of squeeze now gripping the G17 MOS as inventory starts to get low.
For everyday shooters, the takeaway is simple: don’t panic, but don’t snooze either. If a G17 or G19 MOS Gen 5 has been on your wish list, now’s the time to shop smart and move quickly. Set a spending ceiling, stick to reputable sellers, and resist the temptation to chase every price spike.
Whether you see this as a short-term frenzy or a long-term shift, it’s another reminder that even the most predictable handgun market can still surprise you.
