Does anyone own anything that they think they can use without a second of interruption for up to eighty or ninety years without maintenance or protection? Most people treat their hearing that way. Our hearing needs to be protected, and the best way shooters can protect their ability to process sounds from is the incredible technology of suppressors. A “silencer” or “suppressor” is a series of enclosed chambers connected by baffles that, as the bullet is going through the hole (just one millimeter larger than the projectile) between the chambers, the expanding gasses are momentarily trapped, slowed, and cooled and even dispersed to the other chambers by connecting vents. Depending on the use, weight, materials, and desired purpose, suppressors can have between a dozen to just a few baffles. The very high internal pressures and temperatures require the internal components like baffles and caps to be both robust and able to absorb and release heat and stress, especially for cans rated for full-auto use.
Suppressors are over a hundred years old with the first commercially successful silencer made by Hiram Percy Maxim. Mr. Maxim developed his firearm silencer around 1902, securing a patent on March 30, 1909, under the trademarked Maxim Silencer. As a result, in the many years, his patent was in force, the term “Silencer” became the overall description of suppressors and forever conflated silencer and suppressor. Actually, Maxim’s multi-chambered design that contained and re-directed the gasses of a propelled bullet is still what every suppressor does today. The year 2023 has proven to include newly released amazing technology, including 3-D printing use of incredible materials like carbon fibers with durable metals like Titanium and Inconel, which made the modern suppressor a durable, lightweight, and tremendously effective way to protect the only two ears we have been given. Here are some of the new suppressors.
The all-welded Gemtech Abyss is a dedicated 5.56 suppressor constructed from stainless steel and Titanium components. It’s made with a baffle design providing for lower pressure, minimization of muzzle flash and a significant reduction in the audible report all while reducing backpressure. This is helped by venting the gases forward, and actually drawing cooled, burned gasses back in through the endcap to help mitigate the sound and recoil impulse.

The Daniel Defense SoundGuard is a suppressor powered by KGM Suppressors direct gas forward which substantially decreases the amount of blowback. Patent-pending, gas-flow pathing stabilizes rounds and reduces the flash which provides negligible point-of-impact shift. This can be tuned for specific loads by a series of ports individually selected by the shooter. The Daniel SoundGuard uses a direct-thread attachment which utilizes industry-standard HUB 1.375-24 UNS. This provides a secure attachment while adding minimal length and allows for the use of a variety of other muzzle attachments, such as Keymo and ASR. Full-auto rated.
The Carbon Research CR-22 is the lightest, effective .22 LR suppressor on the market. The baffles are contained completely in carbon fiber with the end-caps are made of aluminum with an amazing sound mitigation of 40+ decibels. When shooting the CR-22in a rifle, the only thing the shooter hears is the impact of the firing pin on the primer, until the “PING” of the .22 LR bullet hits the steel. It is full-auto rated and made to last.

The proof of usefulness of any suppressor or “silencer” is just how much noise reduction it can provide. On average, most suppressors provide about 30 (+/- 5) decibel (dB) decrease. That is dependent on the caliber, barrel length, type of weapon, and even atmospheric conditions. Since the decibel scale is logarithmic, the reduction that can be provided is quite a lot. The rule of thumb is that each 10 dB change represents a 10x increase or decrease in sound intensity so that a 30 dB reduction in noise output means that the harmful noise is about thirty times less than an unsuppressed report. That will save your hearing from damage. The ATF on-line process to obtain a suppressor will now save you time and frustration. The licensing process has now reduced the time for silencer purchase approval from many months or even over a year to one to three months to have your new suppressor in hand. As a result, obtaining a competitively priced suppressor made with the best technology, material, and science to protect hearing is now easier than ever. The choice is now based on understand a shooter’s needs to the incredible suppressors that are now available.
